Understanding The Role Of An Anaesthesiologist

Who is an Anaesthesiologist?

An Anaesthesiologist is a doctor who is trained to administer and manage anaesthesia given during the surgical procedure. He is responsible for managing and treating changes in your critical life functions – breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, as they are affected by the surgery that is being performed. He also diagnoses and treats any medical problems that might arise during and immediately after surgery.

What does an Anaesthesiologist do?

An anaesthesiologist is a perioperative physician, “peri” meaning “all-around”. So in simple words, he is responsible for the “all around” care of a patient before, during and after the surgery. Let’s understand how.

Before surgery, an anaesthesiologist does an entire preoperative evaluation. What and how the surgery is supposed to be done, if it is emergent or elective(non-emergent), depending on these factors an anaesthesiologist asks you questions to understand your case, reviews lab results and conducts a physical examination. After a thorough examination, they come up with a final and safest aesthetic plan for the patient’s surgery. This may include general anaesthesia (putting the patient to sleep), and/or a regional nerve block (numbing the affected extremity for surgery or pain management after surgery).

During Surgery the anaesthesiologist makes sure the patient is safe and reacts well to the medication given. Their primary roles according to the American Society of Anaesthesiologists include:

  • Providing a continuous medical assessment to the patient.
  • Controlling the patient’s pain and level of consciousness to make conditions ideal for safe and successful surgery.

After Surgery in the ICU, they monitor the patient’s condition and the effects of anaesthesia. They also make sure pain after the surgery is as little as possible.

Anaesthesiologists are trained doctors in internal medicine, obstetrics (medicine and surgery concerned with childbirth and midwifery) and pain management. Their knowledge of drugs and how they interact with aesthetic agents is extensive and have expertise in identifying conditions that might complicate surgeries. Anaesthesiologists may also manage intensive care units and long-term cancer pain, or handle emergency cardiac and respiratory resuscitation.
