Robotic Partial Nephrectomy for Kidney Cancer

Surgery is considered as the first line of treatment for Kidney Cancer. Removal of Kidney Cancer can be done using larger open incisions or through minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopic or robotic approaches.

At Gujarat Superspeciality Hospital, because of extensive training and experience in these techniques, Kidney Cancer surgeries are performed laparoscopically or robotically.

Partial Nephrectomy is removal of part of the Kidney, usually for tumor, while sparing the remainder from damage or removal. Robotic Partial Nephrectomy is a minimally invasive alternative performed with thin and specialized instruments inserted through tiny incisions such that the surgeon does not have to insert his/her hands inside the abdomen. This results in a cancer cure rate equal to that of open surgery but with far less pain and speedy recovery.

What is the procedure of performing Robotic Partial Nephrectomy?

Robotic Partial Nephrectomy uses an operating telescope and thin, specialized instruments placed in the abdomen through 3-4 keyhole incisions which are of 1 cm each. The blood supply to the kidney is temporarily interrupted to allow for easy removal of tumor without excessive bleeding. The tumor is then carefully dissected free from the kidney and the defect in the kidney is repaired using the robotic suturing techniques. The tumor is then placed inside the retrieval bag and removed through one of the incisions.

What are the benefits of opting for Robotic Partial Nephrectomy?

  • Less Pain
  • Quicker recovery
  • Improved visualization
  • Better cosmetic result
  • Lower transfusion rate
  • Fewer wounds
  • Fewer infections

What are the results of Robotic Partial Nephrectomy?

  • Robotic Partial Nephrectomy controls cancer equally as the traditional open procedure.
  • Blood transfusions are extremely rare.

What to expect after surgery?

  • The hospital stay is for 2 days.
  • Patients can resume normal eating after the surgery is performed.
  • A urinary catheter is left in place for two days following surgery and then removed as soon as the patient is discharged.
  • Most patients are able to return to their daily routines within 4-6 weeks.
