Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) obstruction is a type of condition where a blockage can occur at the junction of the ureter and renal pelvis (kidney).

The ureter is a long, thin tubular structure that carries urine produced by the kidney to the urinary bladder. It actively propels urine from the kidney down into the bladder. This process of transportation is known as peristalsis.

When the Ureteropelvic junction obstruction occurs, it results in the decreased flow of urine down the ureter with an increase of fluid pressure in the kidney. The increased pressure affects the function of the kidney and may deteriorate it over time.

Signs and symptoms of Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction

Ureteropelvic obstruction may cause sharp pain in one side of the body between the upper belly area. It may occur at regular intervals and might increase after the consumption of alcohol, or excessive fluids. The pain is not restricted to the abdomen, it may spread down to the groin. Sometimes, people may confuse the Ureteropelvic obstruction pain with the normal pain.

Causes of Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction

Diagnosis

An ultrasound can be performed to detect a Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction. Further imaging tests can also be performed as and if required. Sometimes, this condition is detected during regular evaluations like X-rays or ultrasound.
